Wuli District, Kunming, China
As one half of the Octagon Partnership working in collaboration with the Oval Partnership, Brock Carmichael Architects participated in a commission to regenerate a 76 hectare site in central Kunming, South West China. The development of the Wuli Masterplan aimed to create an urban living complex that contributes to the sustainable urban development of Kunming. Adopting a people-oriented planning and design approach, the project aims to provide a series of opportunities for the city’s advancements in economy, social life, transportation, tourism and culture. The Wuli Masterplan comprised building functions of retail, office, residential, hotel, soho, education and culture, along with a diverse public realm including parks, plazas and green roofs.
The key concepts of the masterplan were: A sustainable, functional and creative response to Kunming’s requirements as a growing city with rich historical and cultural heritage, in order to stimulate the city’s economy, tourism and social / living standards.
Economical land use through a multiple-layering and dense dwelling development, incorporating commercial features and well-planned green spaces to maximise sustainability.
Central park as green heart of the masterplan – integrating planting of native species, water features and habitat protection with elegant landscape design elements; providing social spaces for sport and leisure, cultural performance, public art, education, contemplation and meditation.
Extension of green fingers and vertical greenhouses into the urban blocks, and simultaneous penetration of urban piers into the central park to create a second level of park surrounded by tree canopies.
Main vehicle access routes to the site perimeter to minimise traffic and promote public transportation, with a street syntax that forms orthogonal grids and creates urban block divisions of order and integrity.
Diverse functions contained within urban blocks, with the introduction of a freestanding tower concept which offers frontage and entrance to towers and podiums independently, as well as creating ground level outdoor public spaces for a mix of users.
