ASU is a fine dining restaurant set within a conserved black-and-white colonial bungalow located in Singapore’s Labrador Nature Reserve. The project reinterprets the building’s early 20th-century heritage through a contemporary interior design approach that respects the architectural character of the original structure.

The design concept creates a quiet, immersive dining environment inspired by the atmosphere of a monastic retreat—calm, contemplative and subtly theatrical. By working sensitively with the existing building fabric, the scheme balances heritage preservation with a refined spatial experience tailored to a modern dining destination.

The design is rooted in a series of spatial dualities—light and shadow, old and new, presence and restraint. The dining layout draws inspiration from the structure of a theatre, where the open kitchen forms the central stage and the dining area becomes the audience.

Two bespoke curved V-shaped dining tables frame the kitchen, creating a dynamic spatial composition that encourages interaction while maintaining an intimate atmosphere. Preserved structural columns remain exposed, forming part of the spatial rhythm and framing key visual moments throughout the interior.

Working within the constraints of a conserved building presented both challenges and opportunities. Existing ceiling heights, column positions and circulation routes informed the final spatial arrangement.

Rather than concealing these structural elements, the design celebrates them, allowing the building’s original framework to guide movement, define spaces and reinforce the narrative of the historic setting.

A restrained palette of warm timber finishes introduces tactility and calm without overwhelming the historic architecture. An apothecary-inspired cabinet behind the kitchen provides a distinctive focal point, combining storage and display through a grid of drawers that reveal curated objects referencing memory and tradition.

Lighting plays a defining role in shaping the atmosphere. Carefully positioned spotlights create intimate dining zones and highlight textures and architectural features, producing a subtle interplay of light and shadow that enhances the contemplative character of the space.

ASU presents a refined balance between heritage and contemporary hospitality design. Through careful material choices, lighting, and spatial composition, the project transforms a historic colonial bungalow into a distinctive dining destination where architecture, atmosphere and culinary performance come together in a carefully orchestrated experience.
