A sensitive yet dynamic award winning conversion of part of Liverpool’s Grade I Listed Albert Dock.

This landmark conversion forms the centrepiece of the Merseyside Maritime Museum. The major challenge was the introduction of modern building services systems and high volume circulation areas to distribute large numbers of visitors into what was previously a bare warehouse used by only a handful of stevedores.

Display floors are designed to maximise efficiency by offering multi-purpose and flexible exhibit space. These primary galleries are supported by picture storage, conservation laboratories, quarantine rooms and model making workshops that are designed to provide opportunities for interpretation and public involvement.

The project received the following awards:

  • RIBA Regional Award
  • Civic Trust Award
  • British Travel Writers Award
