Between 1981 and 1986 Brock Carmichael carried out an extensive refurbishment, remodelling and extension of this much-loved Grade II* Art Deco building.

These works were undertaken to resolve acoustic deficiencies; upgrade and enhance front of house and back of house facilities; increase seating capacity; reconfigure stage and choir areas and risers; redecorate to enhance the overall quality of the internal spaces; and incorporate improved facilities for mobility, hearing and sight impaired users.

The work reconstructed major areas of the auditorium to increase the reverberation time of the hall and sensitively incorporate lighting and service installations without loss of quality or character of the original architecture. An additional line of seats was invisibly added at balcony level and the original balcony front reinstated to the original construction detail.
